Random Association

Formed in November of 1997. Founders Joe Antonioli and John Hadden had worked together in preceeding years, John recording and producing several recordings for the UVM Top Cats of which Joe was the Musical Director. Both boys were aching to start up a professional group, so, when the time was ripe, they did! True to its name, RA found its musicians in a rather random way--through want ads in local Burlington, Vermont papers and via word of mouth. We think we lucked-out, finding us some very fine musicians!

Members: Joe Antonioli, Meg Chambers, Sharon Dorsey, Leigh Guptill, John Hadden, Jill O'Brien, Rich Redmond

Profile for Random Association on singers.com

Random Association: Random Association

The three women and four men of this association cover Top 40 hits, past and present, plus a couple of originals, with smooth sophistication. Whether Sade's "My Sweetest Taboo" or the classic funk of "Take Me To The River" and "Brick House," their tone is full and their feel relaxed, establishing a mood that is subdued. The arrangements are solidly effective, tailored for fit, without gaudy or unnecessary embellishment. The group's interpretation of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" deserves special mention; they slow the tempo dramatically, which exposes the haunting melody underneath. Their original tunes evoke comparisons to Toto and Sarah McLachlan (a connection that Random Association confirms overtly, by including "Africa" and "Possession" in this collection).

Random Association: Random Sample

Vermont-based Random Association is Joe Antonioli, baritone and vocal percussion; Anne Cameron, soprano; Heather Finley, soprano; Rich Redmond, tenor & vocal percussion; Susannah Magee, alto; John Hadden, tenor; and Leigh Guptill, bass. Cameron, Finley and Magee are new to the group since the release of their first cd, "Random Association." This is a four song sampler CD, and the group as usual aims high, focusing on top-40 hits as they did on the first release, where they nicely covered everything from Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and Steve Miller's "Fly Like An Eagle" to Toto's "Africa" and Sade's "My Sweetest Taboo." The songs on the sampler are: Carlos Santana's "Smooth," "Just Desserts," written by tenor John Hadden, "You Win," by the Accidentals, and Lennon and McCartney's "Come Together," a somewhat similar version of which also appeared on the first CD.
